Any artist and crafter should get some time to learn the business basics and start a business the right way.
When you have a guide to know the steps to follow, everything will be easier and simple to build up your own business.
Before you notice, you’ll be creating what you love to do but you’ll be working knowing what your client is looking for from you, this way, you can start selling your art right to your client and you might end having a waiting list, any artist dream come true!
1 – Find the right product.
In the past, most of the business people were lucky enough to come up with a product that will sell well and they were lucky to make money from it day after day.
Today, to start a business that does well day after day, you need to change the way it used to be and you first need to take your time to study the market and learn everything about who will be interested to buy that product before you start to make it.
From this point, as an artist and as a crafter it is better to stop doing or making your product and take time to learn who is your client.
Let’s think for a moment about a knitter who loves to knit, and she/he knits all the time, and this knitter has already made a dozen of sweaters ready to sell on its online store.
This online entrepreneur takes their time to take the photos of the sweaters, the best photos he/she can take and upload the photos on an online store, writes a product description, and set a price for each sweater.
That feeling of when you open your own online store is amazing!
The feeling to think about you’re going to be selling your products and soon you’ll be working from home and become millionaire!
Well, the truth for many on and off-line entrepreneur can be so different from this image in your head.
You might start your online store thinking about getting many sales every day and the truth can be so far from it, you might end with an online store that will never get a sale or just one or two sales per year.
And this might happen just because you don’t have the right product that your target client is looking for.
There is a system you need to follow to find the right product your client is right now looking for!
You can’t keep knitting, crocheting, painting, sculpting, wood carving or anything you love based on you just make it because you love to make it. Unless… you’re happy about what you do and you don’t expect to have any sales from it. You have noticed here, you need to use the right Keywords for your own business. This way you’ll get the right information to start working on your own online business.

2 – Discover a real problem
When you took your time to do research on the internet about how to turn your love for making art and crafts into a real business, you might come to discover the problem your target client has.
This is the main topic that will help you to build up your own successful online business. Find a problem you can solve.
If you’re “client” has not any problem on which you can help him/her to solve out, then there’s no business here for you at all.
The bigger the problem is, you’ll have more chances to help your client and make money from it.
Let’s go back to our knitter.
It has found there’s a problem many people are talking about… winter will be here soon and they don’t have time to knit a new sweater for them and for their family.
The problem they have here is the opportunity for you to solve this problem – will you be willing to knit a sweater for them?
Pay attention to what they write on a comment, you might find the right keyword to use when you write the product description on your online store (SEO) and if you use this keyword, there will be more chances your client will find your store and they will buy your product.
What about if the problem they have is this: they want to knit a sweater in time for next winter.
Will you be interested in writing some knitting patterns to help your client to knit a sweater for each member of his/her family?
Or maybe your client is only interested to knit a sweater for a baby?
OK, so here you have, you have found a few problems to solve with your art or with your crafts.
Selling finished products on the internet is not the only way you can make a full income today on the internet, selling patterns to knit, sew, or making online courses to help your client to make a new painting for their home is a good way to make money online.
The bigger the problem is, the more chances you’ll have to make money from it.
3 – Find the Niche for your product.
If you find one client to sell your product or your online product will be no good for your business, you need to find a group of people with the same problem to solve, and this is called a NICHE.
The more people with the same problem to solve will be the best for your business.
Find a group of people who will be interested to buy your product and who is willing to pay for it.
You can find many people who will be interested to buy your product from your or who will be willing to learn from you for free.
This is a good way to start, but it won’t be good for your business.
You can use the strategy to share some free content to show your target client what is your product, but you need to come up with a product to sell it.
What about the strategy of the 80 – 20 %, if you have already a website where you share some content for your client, keep the rule to share 80 % of your content for free and make a 20 % of your content for a price.
Your client will get to know your product quality when they use your content for free, but they will be willing to pay when you show them your products to buy!

Building a successful business online is not all about sharing everything for free, you need to take your time to make some products to sell online too.
4 – Find a Niche with a problem.
Take your time to find a niche for you and for the product you have in your mind with a problem.
Remember the bigger the problem is, there will be more chances for you to make a business there.
A good niche will be the one who has a problem you can help to solve out, but with enough people with the same problem and with enough money and be willing to pay for your product.
If you find a niche with a problem you can solve out, but with no money and just with one or two people, even if you love to create a product for this niche, run away from this niche. (you can come back later to help them out, when your business makes enough money for you).
5 – Find the solution to this problem.
There are so many problems today and people are looking for some solutions to make a better living anywhere.
It doesn’t matter if you live in a good country or in a poor country, today with the internet and with a good training any artist and crafter can become a successful entrepreneur.
A good idea to start building up your own business online, is to take your time to find someone who is already successful in your niche.
There are many knitters online selling their products and their patterns, you can take a look to their websites and learn from them.
Never copy a business model, but get inspired by their business model and learn how they build up their business.
Have they come up with a solution to the problem you want to help people to solve out?
What do you offer as a solution to this problem?
Do they sell the products or do they sell patterns or online courses?
How do they promote their business?
How do they write the content on their website and blogs, how do they write their products sales pitch?
You can get inspired and learn from people who are successful already on your niche.
Don’t be afraid to ask them some questions, most of the successful entrepreneurs love to share the steps they followed to reach success.
Many of them will be willing to share some path they follow to create a successful business.
Try a few strategies to create the product your client is looking for, you might learn the right way to do it and you’ll get sales for your product.
6 – Is your product the best solution for this problem?
Once you get everything you need to work on your list, check twice and see if your product will be the best solution for the problem your client has today.
Your product needs to be the one they are looking for to solve a particular problem.
You must create the best product on the market today!
When you listen to your client you will have the right keys to create that product.
When you learn who is your client and what is his/her problem, creating a product to solve that particular problem will be not hard for you.
Voila, you have now the best product for this Niche!
It feels great when you have the right product for your client in the market and your store starts to get some sales.
But the road to build up an online business or a business based on what you do is in process all the time.
What you need to do to keep getting sales.
Don’t get back into your studio and keep working there all the time, you need to keep in touch with your client and listen to him/her all the time.
Your client needs might change as they use your product, you need to be ready to make those changes in time to keep that client buying from your store.
They might come up with a new problem and you’ll be ready to help them again, create a new product in time before they need it.
An Entrepreneur business work doesn’t end with a sale.
Your business need to have as many sales as you can get, and there’s nothing better than having a few products you know will help your client to be happier and to live better in advance.
One product will be not enough, but if you listen to your client with attention, you’ll know their needs in advance.
Whether you’re a beginner or an advance artist or crafter, and you want to start to create a full income from what you love to do.
There’s nothing better to do than stop for a moment before you start creating your online or off business to learn everything you need to do.
Don’t start your business just because you love to create one product, and people tell you that’s nice and you should make more to sell it.
Take your time to learn and to know if your product will help a group of people, not only one or two.
You always can start with the product you love to make and people like it, take your time and study your target client.
- Is there a group of people interested already on my product?
- Does my product solve a particular problem?
- Is the group of people interested on my product?
- Does my client have enough money to pay for my product?
- How large is this group of people?
- Can I create a second product and a third one for the same client?
When you know all the answers, you’ll know if your business will have more chances to reach success and make a full business for you.
